If you want to learn how electronics really works, this is the right place to begin. There are thousands of electronics videos and short lessons on YouTube, and watching a few of them can be a great way to get started. But Zen Electronics is about something a little different.
Why Zen Electronics?
Because when you can take technology and turn it into a simple concept—something you can see, touch, measure, and understand—it begins to have a pleasant kind of energy about it. It stops being a collection of formulas and mysterious parts and starts becoming something that makes sense. That kind of useful understanding stays with you. It is a little like learning to ride a bicycle. At first you think about balance, steering, and every movement you make. Then one day you simply ride. You no longer have to remember how to balance—you understand it. That is what we want to do with electronics. I make my living helping people with technology—electrical systems, board-level electronics, web development, chip programming, computer systems, and quite a few other things I have picked up along the way. Here, though, we are going to slow things down.
Zen-like.
We are not going to rush through a bunch of formulas just so we can say we covered them. We are going to build things, measure things, change things, and find out what actually happens. And every so often, I hope you will look at something you just discovered and say:
“Oh… that's cool.”
That moment is important. It means the idea has stopped being somebody else's explanation and has become part of your own understanding. When I was thinking about creating Zen Electronics, I asked AI why anyone would be interested in learning electronics this way. She said that "the unique approach would appeal to many people." (I call ChatGPT Mary, by the way.) Mary actually said quite a bit more than that, but that was the part that mattered to me. There are plenty of places to learn electronics. Zen Electronics is a place to experience it! Understand it! And enjoy discovering how it works.
